Levels of Care

TWAS operates 365 days a year, 24 hours a day staffed by highly educated staff/volunteers of various Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levels, aimed at providing the greatest competent care possible to those we are called to.
  • EMT-B | Emergency Medical Technician or Basic, also known as Basic Life Support (BLS). This is the first level of critcal care provided to all those we help. Our EMT's go through extensive training for 6 months, plus on-site training at agencies, to learn how to operate in EMS provide the lifesaving practices taught to them.
  • EMT-A | Advanced EMT, this is the "next step" for many EMT's in the critical care provided to help. In addition to the their EMT education, members at this level go through and additional 6 months of additional training and field internships. During this time they learn how to start IV's and administer baseline advanced medications. They further expand their capabilities in care offered to our communities.

Levels of Care

  • EMT-P | Paramedic, also known as Advanced Life Support (ALS). This is is the third step/highest level of care on an ambulance. In addition to EMT education, members who obtain their Paramedic go through school and field internships for 1-2 years to learn a myraid of critical practices and medicines. From IV's to intubations, cardiac rhythm interpertation and management, they learn to bounce off their BLS intuition to provide total critical care to our neighbors.
  • CCP/FCP | Critical Care Paramedic/Flight Care Paramedic. This is an additional certification Paramedics take, it is a year long course with independent certification exams. With this course, these paramedics can provide interventional critical care and (with regional/agency policies) administer critical medications and blood products as needed.

Transport and Call Types

TWAS responds to a 2 main different types of "calls/transports".
  • Emergent | 911 Calls, When someone calls 911 they speak with a county Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD), who is trained to ask questions and dispatch the appropriate Emergency Services (Fire, EMS, Police). Once we are dispatched, we receive the general information of the call and respond immediately. Utilizing EMD coding and crew intuition we respond in 2 different emergent modes: base emergent is when we drive with traffic and maintain speed limits, this is our normal response to most 911 calls; Lights and Sirens, this mode is used when seconds count, during this type we exceed normal traffic as we respond to life threating calls. Some of our calls, we will utilize airmedical (helicopters) to further expedite care as needed.
  • Interfacility Transports | IFT's, These are transfers from local hospitals to specialized facilities (ex.trauma, cardiac, stroke). These are coordinated with the local hospital and are taken, as able, without hindering our primary operation as EMS.
